Gangarama Temple - Colombo

Gangarama Temple is located in the heart of the Colombo city by the Beire Lake. This is one of the prominent Buddhist center in Colombo and visited by many local and foreign devotes daily.

If you visit Gangarama Temple in morning hours, you can see many young crowed come there and used to meditate for sometime before starting their daily office work. Even though Gangarama is not relative a large temple in land extent, there are many more things to see there. 

Actually this is a cultural museum, which displays many exhibits related to Sri Lankan history as well as other regional Buddhist countries.

Gangaramaya Temple was established by most venerable Hikkaduewe Sri Sumanga Thero, nearly a 120 years ago. Ven Devundera Sri Jinarathana Nayaka Thero was the first head priest of this.

Gangarama Seema Malakya is located in the Beire Lake and you can reach via small wooden bridge.

The Famous Gangarama Nawam Perehara, which was a annual event from year 1979, attracts many visitors. This procession consist of thousands of dancer and large number of elephants. And seconds only to Sri Dalada Perahara.
